The Avonlea School is a small building located in Avonlea, Prince Edward Island, where most of Avonlea's children receive their education. The schoolhouse is close to many of the farms as most of the students walk to school.

Though it is not specified when the school was built, Matthew is seen in flashbacks attending the same school, suggesting that it was built at least around 1850, if not earlier. The school has a front coat room, a storage room, and one large classroom. The building also has a small bell tower and a wood stove. Outside, there is a "take notice" board that the students use in later episodes, as well as a small stream that they use to keep their lunch cold.

Notable teachers from the school include Mr. Phillips and Miss Stacy.

The schoolhouse is home to the Avonlea Gazette, a local newspaper distributed on Sundays.

The school is burned down in Season 3 after a dispute between the newspaper and the school board over freedom of speech. Though it is claimed by the school board (with the exception of Rachel Lynde) to be an accident, most involved suspect that it was intentional as the printing press which was on loan is not in the wreckage. The students react with horror and grief at losing their schoolhouse, but continue to meet at Miss Stacy's house.

In the summer after Anne and her classmates graduate, the school is rebuilt.
