Marilla Cuthbert is one of the main characters of Anne. She is portrayed by Geraldine James.
CBC Biography[]
A self-restrained woman with no patience for sentiment or frivolity, Marilla’s dormant maternal nature and wry sense of humour are rekindled in relationship to Anne. She is played by Geraldine James. [1]
Story[]
Marilla has lived with her brother, Matthew Cuthbert, her whole life after the passing of her other brother, Michael, and her mother. In season one, the sibling duo decide to adopt a boy from Nova Scotia to help Matthew around the farm due to his old age, much to the displeasure of her best friend Rachel Lynde, who tells her that adopting a boy is a bad idea. The Cuthberts end up getting Anne Shirley from the Hopeton Asylum instead. Marilla is furious and demands to send the orphan girl back. She allows Anne to stay the night at their house and tells her she will be returning back to the asylum in the morning. After many discussions, tears and trial, the siblings decide to keep Anne because they end up liking her bubbly personality and vast imagination, even if Marilla never admits it.
Later onwards, Marilla tells Anne that she should write her name in the Family Bible to become a Cuthbert and Anne happily does so, with tears in her eyes. She then becomes Anne Shirley-Cuthbert.
